If you've looked at theStick and thought "68 games sounds like a lot to learn before I can even start" — that's a completely fair reaction, and it's the single most common piece of feedback we hear. So let's address it directly and honestly: you don't need to learn 68 games. You need to learn one, and everything else can sit there unused for as long as you want.

The actual truth about how groups use it

Almost every group that plays on theStick runs one game — usually skins, or a nassau, sometimes a simple wolf. The other 60-plus games exist because different groups have different house rules, not because any one group is expected to use all of them. Think of the game list less like a syllabus you have to work through and more like a menu you never have to read past the first item if you don't want to. The depth is there for the groups that eventually want it — a league running six formats across a season, a group that likes stacking three side bets at once — but it's opt-in, not a starting requirement.

A suggested first-round path

If you're setting up your very first round, here's the whole path:

Pick one simple game. Skins or a straightforward nassau are the two easiest starting points — both are formats most golfers already understand instinctively.

Use voice entry for the round. Say the score as it happens — "Alvin birdie, Rich bogey" — and let the card fill itself. You don't need to learn a UI before you can start; you just need to talk normally.

Watch the automatic settle-up happen once, before trying anything else. At the end of the round, look at how theStick worked out who owes who. That's the moment the whole value of the app clicks — you didn't do any of that math, and it's just right.

That's it. That's the entire onboarding. Everything past that point is optional depth you can explore later, if and when you want it.

What a first-time host actually needs to configure

Three things, no more:

The course — search it, pick your tees.

You do not need to configure handicap settings, understand every setting, or pre-plan side bets before your first round. Those are things to explore on your second or third round, once you already trust that the basics work.

You do not need to understand handicap math yourself

This is worth saying plainly: theStick applies handicap strokes correctly, hole by hole, automatically. You don't need to know what a stroke index is, how allocation works past 18 strokes, or any of the mechanics behind it — connect your Handicap ID if you have a Handicap Index and the app does the rest silently in the background (no Handicap Index yet? This is genuinely one of the parts of golf betting that trips people up most when they try to do it by hand or in a spreadsheet, and it's exactly the part you get to stop thinking about entirely.

The 68-games number is a strength, not a homework assignment

The reason there are 68 games isn't that theStick expects you to learn all of them — it's that whatever house rule your group already plays, there's a good chance it's already built in, correctly, with automatic settlement. That's a library you draw from when you're ready, not a wall you have to climb before round one.
